SURFACE SETTLEMENT DUE TO SHEAR STRESSES AT DEPTH

The authors review Mindlin's solution for surface vertical displacement due to horizontal force at depth and then integrate for shear stresses acting on a long rectangular reinforcing strip. Four types of shear-stress variations--uniform, linear decrease, power-law decrease, and triangular--are considered. A parametric study reveals the effect of length, depth, and distance of the loaded area from the x-axis and Poisson's ratio of the soil on the settlement reductions. The results can be useful in estimating settlement reduction due to strip reinforcement of soil beneath loaded footings.
