UNIFIED FORMULATION FOR ANALYSIS OF SLOPES WITH GENERAL SLIP SURFACE

Slope failures typically involve the formation of a failure surface followed by relative sliding between the two masses of soil along this surface. Current analytical methods to assess the stability of slopes can be grouped into three categories that hypothetically describe the internal forces: 1) direction of internal forces, 2) height of the line of thrust, and 3) shape of the distribution function of the internal shear forces. An analytical framework is presented to facilitate and unify slope stability analysis with general slip surfaces, incorporating most current methods of analysis. Observations are made for both circular and noncircular slip surfaces and presented.
