A busway is a highway devoted strictly to the use of buses. It provides those who manage bus operations with the same control of the operating environment as is true for rapid transit. The busway combines the flexibility of a bus to go anywhere there is a decently paved street or highway, with the freedom from traffic intervention enjoyed by rapid transit. Only a handful of busways exist in North America. The article takes a look at the existing systems and also tries to identify the reasons for the seeming lack of interest in them.
