DEICER PLAYS VITAL ROLE IN WINTER BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

Article discussing methods used in winter maintenance of the Varina-Enon Bridge which crosses the James River, near Richmond, Virginia. VDOT uses a sophisticated bridge deck monitoring system similar to systems used to monitor runway conditions at many major airports, which kept the bridge functioning during severe ice storms in February 1994. The SSI system (Surface Systems Incorporated, St. Louis, Missouri) continuously monitors the bridge deck temperature and condition (wet, dry, freezing), air temperature, chemical factors, and numerous other information components necessary for efficient management of the bridge. Complementing this sophisticated bridge monitoring system is the CG-90 Surface Saver deicer, a mixture of road salt and corrosion and scaling inhibitors.
