DESIGN OF A NEW DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM FOR SPREADING ROCK SALT

The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), UK is working on a new design of distributor for rock salt, under contract to the Department of Transport, in order to achieve more uniform dispersal of rock salt and to reduce wastage caused by overspreading. The new distributor will be capable of spreading rock salt over carriageway widths of up to 18.5 m. The final stage of the research is due for completion in 1993/94 and will consist of building a prototype distributor system. Road trials are in progress to assess its performance. The intention is to incorporate the improved prototype distributor into an advanced design of spreading vehicle, featuring a modified back end to reduce turbulence. Further work is being undertaken to improve the final design performance. Design of the spinning disk is also being finalized to combine performance with production quality thus ensuring the optimum specification is available regarding weight, strength and balance.
