AUTOMATION OF SALT DOSAGE ACCORDING TO ROAD CONDITION AND SURFACE TEMPERATURE

Operators of electronic spreading machines set the required amount of material to be dispensed for a given road condition based on their subjective assessment and experience and without any objective knowledge about the roadway temperature and the amounts of moisture on it. To improve this shortcoming, infrared cameras can be used to assess the temperature of the pavement without contact, and variable dispensing settings can be used to measure moisture on the pavement. In this way, the necessary amounts of deicer are dispensed automatically and adjusted continuously to changing conditions. With the help of this control system, the Landscape Association of Westfalen-Lippe has reduced the amount of thawing agent in dispenses by up to 30 percent and enhanced both the ecological soundness and economic efficiency of its winter road maintenance operations.
