INFLUENCE OF ROAD FLUXES ON ECO-SYSTEMS NEAR A HEAVILY-TRAVELED ROAD

The General Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works has sponsored a study on the influence of deicing salts on the ecosystems situated near a major road. This study has compared the initial physicochemical state of the Wimbe with that observed after the E411 construction. The analyses carried out during the 90/91 and 91/92 winters show no biological deterioration although some important increases in the chloride content have been registered during the salt spreading period. These increases were too brief to affect the ecosystem. The use of CaCl2 on a larger scale, especially in the form of brine, and the working out of more localized as well as more accurate weather forecast techniques should reduce even more the effect of deicing products on the ecosystems in question.
