THE "USE LESS SALT - USE BETTER SALT" CAMPAIGN

Steadily rising deicing salt consumption together with particularly harsh weather conditions from 1986 to 1987 have led France to launch a large-scale training and information campaign on the correct use of deicing chemicals in late 1987. The means and actions of the campaign called "less salt but better spread" are briefly described. Psychological as well as organizational and technical consequences are presented. It is difficult to assess the impact of this campaign on the consumption of deicing salts with accuracy since France has no means to measure the harshness of winter weather. From partial experimentation it is however possible to deduce that the aim of a 30 percent reduction of the consumption in terms of constant winter weather conditions has been virtually reached.
