BRINE SPREADING IN WINTER MAINTENANCE - SAVING POTENTIAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS

The technique of pre-wetted salt was developed for practical usage about 15 years ago. Since then pre-wetted salt was more and more used in German winter maintenance. The advantages of pre-wetted salt in comparison to dry salt are better effects upon streets in combination with much lower salt consumption. Because of higher costs for the equipment for pre-wetting salt this technique is still not used generally in winter maintenance. A research project of the Technical University of Darmstadt now for the first time has quantified the savings of salt when using pre-wetted salt, amounting between 24 and 44 percent of the whole salt consumption per winter. This leads to savings in winter maintenance costs although higher prices for the equipment must be paid.
