WINTER INDEX - DEFINITION OF A PARAMETER FOR DESCRIBING WINTER RIGIDITY

The evaluation of resources used up during winter maintenance, especially the use of road salt, is difficult because of the varying winter weather. If it were possible to express the intensity of a winter by an appropriate measure, i.e., a winter index, the quantities of road salt used in different winters could be compared. This winter index is used in order to standardize the actual quantity of road salt used based on a theoretical quantity relating to the climatic conditions of the winter season. This paper describes the derivation of various models representing the intensity of winter weather and discusses the information value and limits of these models. Due to the good results of the initial approaches to this question, it is planned to continue developing the winter index in order to express it even more precisely.
