LIME TREATMENT OF ASPHALT MIXTURES IN IMPROVING RESISTANCE TO MOISTURE

Airport flexible pavement is susceptible to moisture damage. Lime treatment of asphalt pavement is considered to be an effective method in improving resistance to moisture. It has been reported that field application techniques of adding lime may have strong influence on the performance of lime-treated asphalt mixtures while laboratory studies have shown that treatment with lime slurry is more effective than treatment with dry lime. This paper summarizes a laboratory investigation to evaluate the effectiveness of lime treatment in protecting asphalt mixtures from moisture damage. The lime treatment was evaluated using both the wet-dry indirect tensile strength ratios and the boil test values. The test results indicate that the slurry form of adding hydrated lime is effective in treating the asphalt mixtures. For the covering abstract of the proceedings see IRRD 864230.
