VITAL EVIDENCE

In this article, how GIS is being utilised by the Traffic and Highways Division of Croydon Council is briefly described. Accident data obtained from the London Research Centre is accessed monthly to update the GIS with the latest statistics, maps and reports on the locations and details of accidents can be quickly produced. The GIS system also holds data on bus stops and routes. Data on pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, and street lights in the process of being added. In the future it will be possible to view planned traffic schemes in relation to existing features, allowing the preliminary design work to be carried out in the office. The locations of HGV operators and new licence applications are also being added, proposals for sites can then be viewed in relation to other environmentally sensitive features.
