EQUATION FOR PREDICTING THE STRENGTH OF FULLY-CLAMPED TWO-WAY REINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS

A finite element program for analysing membrane action in reinforced concrete slabs was developed and validated, using the results of four slabs tested by another author. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the numerical and experimental results. A series of 243 computer-model slabs was then analysed to obtain data on imposed loads carried by clamped two-way slabs at their compression failure. The data were used to develop an equation for predicting the 'ultimate strength' of a fully-clamped slab of known material and geometric properties. The developed equation gave an average value of 0.87 for the ratio of experimental to predicted strength of 23 slabs tested by different authors. Further work is required to take flexibility of supports into consideration.
