HIGH PERFORMANCE ROAD MARKINGS

The use of road markings with high night-time reflectivity is considered. The use of such markings has become more likely with the proposed CEN 226 Draft Road Marking Specification and the use of mobile reflectometers such as Ecodyn to enforce it. In a survey in 1993 only 31% of A and B roads met the recommended level of 100mcd/lux/m2. Statistics are presented for the accident savings which can be made through improved marking quality. Prismo's high performance materials Lifeline 200 and Lifeline 100 are guaranteed to produce reflectivity of 200 and 100 mcd/lux/m2 for a minimum of 2 years. Trials using Lifeline 200 in Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire are described. Initial readings varied considerably but those taken at 6months showed a difference of only 17mcd.
