NATIONAL SURVEY OF MATERIALS ENGINEERING PROGRAM
In an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) survey, 225 accredited civil engineering programs were asked about current education and training programs in the field of materials engineering. The ASCE questionnaire had five sections: 1) school background and demographics, 2) aspects of materials engineering courses (required and elective courses), 3) facilities and laboratory equipment, 4) availability of instructional material, and 5) respondent feedback and educational philosophy. The present status of materials education is far from satisfactory. This paper presents the results of the survey as well as recommendations for improving the materials engineering sequence.
