ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

The education of future civil engineers would be incomplete without an understanding and appreciation of the profession's founding fathers. Late 18th and early 19th century pioneers--like da Vinci, Palladio, and Whipple--took truss design and construction in wood and iron from an art form to a science. This paper introduces the concept of prepackaged "history modules" for civil engineering students. The modules span a 300-year period and report on the accomplishments of many noted engineers.
