THE CONTRIBUTION TO THE OVERALL NOISE LEVEL OF THE VIBRATION OF AN OPEN GRID BRIDGE DECK

In this paper, the relative contribution from the grid vibrations to the overall noise level is determined from consideration of the radiation efficiency of the grid and field measured vibration levels. The first part of this paper deals with field measurements of the sound pressure levels on the side of the road near the grid section and the vibration levels of the grid, and the second part deals with laboratory measurements performed to determine the radiation efficiency of two typical grid configurations. For the field measurements, data for the sound pressure levels and vibration levels were collected on twelve bridges with different grid types. From this data, the type of the interaction of the vehicle tire with the grid deck and the influence that this has on the radiated noise was determined.
