USE OF SALT AS DEICING AGENT IN THE WINTER ROAD MAINTENANCE

In order to gain a more certain basis for the friction action strategy, a three year research programme was started in Norway in 1991/92 with the main purposes to study the effect on traffic flow and traffic safety by using salt as a deicing agent to improve the friction conditions. A comparison between salted and unsalted roads in the study shows so far that for the unsalted roads, the accident rate is higher in the winter period than in the summer period. For the salted roads there is a minor difference in the winter period as compared to the summer period. The observed accident rate for the unsalted roads seems to be 25 percent higher than expected from the geometric standard.
