SPECTRUM NEEDS FOR INTELLIGENT VEHICLE-HIGHWAY SYSTEM APPLICATION
On July 14-15, 1993, the Transportation Research Board's Communications Committee (A3A01) sponsored a workshop on Intelligent Vehicle-Highway System (IVHS) spectrum needs. This Circular presents an overview of the workshop, summaries of the breakout group sessions, and the results of the workshop in the form of matrices and research problem statements. A list of application definitions used to generate the numbers in the matrices is provided. The workshop generated much discussion and debate among the participants on specific IVHS communications needs. This discussion identified a substantial need for significant research in the areas of wide-area communications, short range communications, and emergency applications. There were different views among the participants on the specifics of the IVHS communications requirements. Two general conclusions can be drawn from the discussions: 1) where possible, IVHS could rely upon existing infrastructure and service providers, and 2) some services, particularly but not explicitly limited to those areas of emergency and safety-related services, will require dedicated bandwidth allocated exclusively to IVHS.
