Trenchless pipeline installation and renovation has been developed for use in urban areas where high traffic flow and exis buried services can lead to disruption and damage when trenching used. A comprehensive study has been carried out to make users aware of the available trenchless techniques enabling them to be compared with conventional methods. Advice on standard documentation for projects is given, including factors affecting conditions of contract and specification. Current and pending legislation is reviewed. A range of trenchless systems and equip technically appraised and a manual is to be prepared which collates and presents information on the systems giving advice on selection procedures. Recommendations are given on the format of educational material, and training needs will be appraised. A business cost model will be developed and advice given on how to interface with the customer following a series of interviews to determine their needs and perceptions. The article is based on a presented at a meeting of the Pipeline Industries Guild held in Swindon on 15th September 1993.
