UNDERGROUND CAR PARK, NEW SQUARE, BEDFONT LAKES

The design was highly commended in the Civil Engineering category of the Concrete Society Awards for its careful detailing combined with an unobtrusive integration of services and subtle landscaping at ground level to produce a high quality environment. The car park, at the centre of a formal square of three-storey office buildings, provides spaces for 1600 cars, 1200 of which are on two levels below ground. Natural light and air penetrate the two underground levels through perimeter slots and larger interior openings providing enough ventilation to avoid the use of mechanical smoke extractors. A combination of in-situ concrete retaining walls and cores with precast concrete frame and staircases made very rapid construction in an open excavation possible. Spaces between twin precast concrete primary beams provide ducts for drainage, electrical services and sprinkler mains. Foundations are reinforced concrete strips with the retaining wall propped at foundation level and first floor with a movement joint provided all round the grade level slab.
