GUIDE TO RETAINING WALL DESIGN. SECOND EDITION

This geoguide covers the types of retaining walls commonly used in Hong Kong. These include: a) conventional reinforced concrete walls; b) gravity walls such as crib walls, gabion walls, and mass concrete walls; and c) cantilevered retaining walls. In giving recommendations on design, the limit state method with partial factors of safety is used. Sections are provided on the following. 1) Design considerations. This includes: performance criteria, durability, maintenance, aesthetics, site investigation and the geological model. 2) Construction considerations in design, such as selection of backfill and filter and drainage materials. 3) Construction methods. 4) Verification of safety and serviceability. 5) Geotechnical parameters. 6) Earth pressure. 7) The effects of surcharge and seismic load. 8) The effects of water, and drainage provisions. 9) Monitoring. 10) maintenance.
