PARKING AND TRAFFIC DEMAND

As part of a programme of research into urban traffic congestion, its causes and possible cures, the Department of Transport has commissioned research into ways of using parking control to reduce traffic demand in congested urban areas. The first stage of the project, which will be completed in March 1993, will review the key issues, the range of policy tools that might be available, and the adequacy of current modelling and evaluation techniques. Four case studies will be selected for detailed study in Stage 2. During Stage 2, research to bridge gaps in knowledge will be undertaken, along with the development of analytical tools. Through the case studies, a range of scenarios, including appropriate complementary measures, will be studied to assess the effectiveness of parking control measures in reducing traffic demand. This research is expected to be completed in early 1995. (A) This abstract only is published in the seminar proceedings. For the covering abstract see IRRD 863439.
