PROFILED MARKING MATERIAL - I

GEPROFILEERD MARKERINGSMATERIAAL - I

This report is part of a research project on road marking materials with improved wet night visibility. It discusses the results of the first two years of investigation into the performance of nine profiled marking materials by means of test section and laboratory research. The aims of the study are: a) to assess the influence of climatic conditions, mechanical damage by vehicles, and suchlike on the properties of the marking materials during their period of service; b) to develop test methods and to formulate specifications on the basis of which the behaviour of a new marking material can be predicted by means of simple laboratory investigations. The materials included seven profiled markings on a thermoplastic base, one preformed material, and one mass of acrylate in which reflective pavement markers are put. The construction of the test section on a Dutch state road is discussed, followed by measurements of the daylight and night visibility, and the results of visual assessments. The laboratory investigations concentrate on the determination of test results which may account for deviant behaviour of the markings in practice. For other reports of the research project see IRRD 863634- 863635.
