THE ROLE OF VOYAGE SIMULATION IN SHIP DESIGN AND OPERATION

The role of voyage simulation in the design and operation of merchant vessels is discussed. The authors describe a particular method of modeling vessel operation by combining time-dependent deteriorative effects in service with location-dependent effects such as wind and waves. The influence of risk and uncertainty in both design and operation of merchant vessels is shown. Methods of modeling risk and uncertainty are presented and practical solutions to the problem of incorporating uncertainty into the decision-making process are proposed. Three case studies are presented, demonstrating the versatility of a voyage simulation system at the design as well as the operational level.
