With the launch of a new SOLAS radio charter in 1992, the traditional specialist radio officer will eventually be replaced by a radio operator with limited background in maritime telecommunications. An extensive training program will be needed to prepare the bridge staff for their new tasks of handling transmitters and receivers. A simulator developed in Sweden by Standard Radio and Telefon AB to help fill this need is described. Intended for training GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) radio operators, it consists of a computer network that connects a tutor with up to 16 trainees. Each trainee has his or her own computer and simulated radio.
