This article presents the first part of a two-part analysis of containerized shipping drawn from a paper prepared by CSR Consultants, UK, for presentation at the TransMed '90 Conference. It points out such negative factors as recent fluctuations in economic prospects and uncertainties generated by the Gulf crisis, both of which call into question the future health of global container trade. Despite these factors, however, it finds reason for cautious optimism.
