STATISTICAL CHARACTERISTICS ON THE COMPRESSIVE ULTIMATE STRENGTH OF DECK PANELS

When a ship is in a sagging condition, deck panels experience compressive loads. The compressive ultimate strength of deck panels is therefore important in the consideration of longitudinal strength. When decks are welded during ship construction, deck panels are distorted and deflected. This initial deflection reduces the compressive ultimate strength of the deck panels. In a study that is described, the initial deflection of some 450 deck panels was measured, and the shape and magnitude of the deflection investigated. The compressive ultimate strength of the panels is calculated and its statistical characteristics are examined.
