NEW IMO CODE OF SAFE PRACTICE FOR STOWAGE AND SECURING CARGO

Details are provided on the new Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing, found in the revised Chapter VI of the SOLAS Convention. The purpose of the code is to provide an international standard to promote the safe stowage and securing of cargoes by drawing attention to the need to ensure that a ship is suitable for its intended purpose; providing advice to ensure that a ship is equipped with proper cargo securing means; providing advice concerning proper stowage and securing to minimize risks; providing specific advice on cargoes known to create difficulties and hazards with regard to their stowage and securing; advising on actions that may be taken in heavy seas; and advising on actions that can be taken to remedy the effects of cargo shifting.
