RORO INTERFACE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY (WITH CASE STUDIES FROM BELFAST, POOLE AND SHEERNESS NEW RORO TERMINALS)

This paper first considers some of the trends in the development of ro/ro shipping as they affect the ro/ro interface at ports. It goes on to review the current design philosophy for the ro/ro interface. Examples are presented from recently completed installations at Belfast, Poole and Sheerness, in Northern Ireland and the UK, and from a terminal under design. The paper concludes with comments on the factors that influence the design of terminals, with particular reference to storage areas.
