Safe and rapid adjustment to different cargoes is of evergrowing importance for the economic deployment of LPG and products tankers. If two successive cargoes are incompatible, the use of a suitable, nonreactive rinsing agent is required. In the latest LPG tankers, the aim is for the demands placed on such agents to be obviated thanks to the use of shipboard systems that require no recourse to shore installations. A new inert gas is introduced that should offer shipowners considerably better possibilities for cleaning tanks, especially when cargoes are changed.
