This article discusses the outlook for this sector, noting, among other aspects, that there has been a dramatic improvement in the image of intermodal transportation as perceived by shippers; that more stack trains are being added to meet the demand for domestic containerization service; that rapid growth is creating an equipment shortage; and that the domestic freight traffic being gained for intermodal transportation is being won from the highways.
