API RP2A PRACTICE FOR THE 1990S--A STEP FORWARD

The American Petroleum Institute has just published a draft limit state alternative to the 18th edition of API RP2A (known as API RP2A-LRFD),"Recommended Practice for Planning, Designing and Constructing Fixed Offshore Platforms." The background to this new limit state version, as well as its safety format, is briefly reviewed. Differences between the formulations used in recent issues of RP2A and LFRD are described. The calibration procedure used in the derivation of partial load and resistance factors is discussed and consequences for new designs in the Gulf of Mexico, U.S. West Coast and North Sea are summarized. The paper closes by briefly reviewing the advantages of adopting an LRFD format for design.
