ADVANCES IN CHAIN TECHNOLOGY FOR OFFSHORE MOORINGS

During the 1970s and 1980s, the manufacture of ship chain was gradually transformed into the manufacture of chain suitable for offshore moorings. The evolution of specifications for mooring chain is discussed, and the advances in chain technology that accomplished the transformation are briefly described. They include improvements in metallurgy and production engineering by the bar manufacturers; in production engineering in chain factories; in the flash-welding technique; in heat-treatment facilities; in the philosophy underlying quality assurance; and in the shape of the chain.
