The three major approaches to shipboard machinery monitoring and maintenance--reactive, predictive and preventive--have been well defined, and the pros and cons of each have been comparatively debated from various viewpoints. This paper advances the idea that all three methods have a place in the overall shipboard maintenance scheme, and proposes a formula to develop a comprehensive program of planned maintenance that integrates the methods in a complementary manner to provide a net decrease in maintenance and repair costs. This comprehensive machinery maintenance program has five segments: personnel training; machinery history; equipment condition monitoring; maintenance and repair scheduling; and inventory control. Each of these areas is discussed in detail, especially from the perspective of the three approaches to maintenance. Practical examples of techniques that can be applied to achieve more trouble- free machinery operation are provided.
