MODELING AND TRANSFER OF PRODUCT MODEL DIGITAL DATA FOR THE DDG 51 CLASS DESTROYER PROGRAM

The U.S. Navy's AEGIS Destroyer Program has successfully implemented a production support program that fully utilizes the benefits of CAD/CAM in ship construction. The program involves the use of a database for storage and retrieval of information on numerous three-dimensional product models that realistically represent the geometrical and associated design data of ship components. The database includes detailed design drawings, manufacturing procedures, and numerical control machining instructions that can readily be extracted, reviewed and improved during any one of the ship's construction stages. The system eliminates duplication of data, reduces labor time, and ensures accuracy, thus reducing total construction costs. Future life cycle maintenance functions will likewise be benefited by the information in the wide-ranging database. Although significant developmental work remains to be done, the AEGIS Destroyer Program is now in a position to realize long-term goals resulting from the further development and utilization of the program's technology.
