A power plant simulator has been developed at the Western Basin Training Center at Kolingrad, in the USSR, to develop and improve the practical skills of ship mechanic personnel in the industrial fishing fleet. For training, six to twelve personal computers are used, each of which is a student workstation. Following a discussion of the principles underlying the training courses, this article concentrates on presenting the formulas used as the basis for a specially developed program that evaluates student progress and that runs on the personal computers used for the training. Experience has shown that with the aid of the simulator, operators achieve a standard level of professional training.
