The pressure on port authorities to provide faster ship turnaround times is not limited to congested third world ports, but is universal. Larger ships are coming on-stream, more competitive pressures are being exerted on shipping lines, and more specialist trades are being introduced. Fortunately, the manufacturers of cargo handling equipment are as competitive as the shipping lines and continue to make new and improved equipment available, much of it incorporating hi-tech innovations.
