BASIC TRENDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTEGRATED AUTOMATION OF SEAGOING SHIPS--A DISCUSSION
The proposed architecture for a fully integrated ship automation system--called the Process Control System (PCS)--is described and is diagrammed in considerable detail. The principle underlying the functional and structural design of the PCS is that it comprises a class of distributed systems. It is a man-machine complex of microprocessor systems (stations) concentrated in ship compartments and combined into a network for the transmission of data, providing for the effective control of individual shipboard processes and of the ship as a whole.
