TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS AND MAINTENANCE ECONOMICS FOR THE MARITIME CHANNELS IN THE LOIRE ESTUARY

The maritime channels in France's Loire Estuary constitute the basic substructure of Port Atlantique Nantes-Saint Nazaire. The topic of this article is the dredging technology that is applied to ensuring the permanence of the nautical characteristics of these channels. The discussion covers the current conditions and sedimentary characteristics of the estuary; a new technique called Densitometry Assisted Hydrography for the assessment of navigable depth; navigability in silt; economy in dredging depth-maintenance operations; and the economic assessment of improvement initiatives planned.
