SAILS OF NEW FINNISH-USSR DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Joint Soviet-Finnish development work on sail equipment for the research vessel AKADEMIK IOFFE is described. The configuration consists of two sail structures made of composite materials capable of sustaining large deflections without breaking. Each sail is comprised of five identical asymmetric elements, two of which turn about the vertical axis. Although the multiwing configuration is regarded as a prototype, further development of the sail control electronics could make it a genuine alternative for wind-assisted propulsion on certain types of vessels.
