STUDY ON THE OPTIMAL COORDINATION BETWEEN SHIP AND RESTRICTED WATERWAY

It is described how a considerable amount of ship model experimental data--namely, 184 model resistance curves in shallow water and 53 model resistance curves in waterways with trapezoidal or rectangular cross sections--were analyzed. Regression analysis was used to establish formulas for calculating resistance in shallow water with infinite width and finite width. Based on these formulas, a computer program was developed for optimizing the relationship between ships and waterways with regard to such factors as ship principal dimensions, waterway parameters, main engine power and designed ship speed. It is claimed that use of the method proposed could greatly improve the performance of inland waterway vessels.
