NONLINEAR ROLLING MOTIONS OF SHIPS IN LONGITUDINAL WAVES

The qualitative response behavior of a ship rolling in longitudinal waves is examined. An analytical-numerical technique is used to predict the qualitative changes that occur as one of the parameters is gradually changed. Analog and digital computer simulations confirm the accuracy of the predictions and complement the qualitative peculiarities of the dynamics. A bifurcation diagram summarizes the results of the analysis and simulations, and shows the instability boundaries. It is shown that the linearized equation cannot be used to predict very dangerous resonant regions. Two distinct scenarios found to cause vessel capsizing are detailed.
