Rethinking even the most basic features of ship design, such as propeller configuration, can yield important progress in efficiency and energy savings. It is described how Japan's NKK Corp. has achieved one such fundamental improvement with the off-center propeller ship, or NOPS. On a clockwise-turning propeller ship, the off-center propeller and rudder are shifted by 10 to 15 percent of the propeller diameter to the starboard side of the ship's centerline. Maneuverability is not compromised, and energy savings of 3 to 9 percent are achieved.
