The world of mobile communications enters a new era in 1990 as the Inmarsat satellite communications system undergoes its most fundamental modification since becoming operational in 1982. The three "ocean regions" that have been the cornerstone of global coverage since the system's inception in 1982 become four through the division of the Atlantic Ocean Region into two separate regions. The creation of the fourth region is expected to boost capacity and improve the quality of service in the network's busiest areas.
