HYDRAULIC DESIGN EXPERIENCES AND PRACTICES OF NAVIGATION LOCKS IN CHINA

The total length of China's navigable inland waterways is about 56,00 km. Some 900 navigation locks and 60 ship lifts are located along these waterways, almost all of which were built from 1960 on. This article examines the hydraulic design of the locks and the criteria by which their filling and emptying systems were selected. Some typical examples of projects are described. In addition, the article presents hydraulic computations needed in lock design--such as for the determination of filling and emptying time, or of hawser forces on moored vessels in a lock chamber--and recommends various measures for mitigating or preventing valve cavitation in high lift locks.
