WAYS TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF SEAGOING CARGO SHIPS

The development of a highly efficient ship is dependent upon many factors. Chiefly, it involves reducing construction costs, fuel consumption and operating outlays, while simultaneously increasing capacity. Although today's cargo ships are considerably more economical than their predecessors, the potential for improvement is far from exhausted. The ways in which this potential can be more fully realized are analyzed. Although the analysis is limited to ships that carry bulk cargo (tankers, bulk carriers and combination carriers), the conclusions can, to a large extent, also be applied to general cargo ships.
