A NEW GENERATION OF SPHERICAL TANK LNG CARRIERS

A completely new design has been adopted for the 125,000 cu m LNG carriers to be used for the Australian Northwest Shelf Project. The new carriers are characterized by an advanced 4-spherical-tank system. Not only does this lead to easier cargo handling and maintenance, but it also reduces the amount of necessary equipment. In choosing this system, careful attention has been paid to fundamental performance. A reduced boiloff rate, combined with a forcing vaporizer system, has been adopted to cope freely with changes in the speed of the ship and variations in fuel utilization. Actual field tests on the new LNG carrier confirm the reliability of this novel design.
