DREDGERS LEAD THE WAY IN ALLUVIAL MINING TECHNOLOGY

The ways are described in which the many technological advances in the design of bucket-wheel suction dredgers will lead to significant changes in alluvial mining techniques. In particular, the features of the new Nu-Ultra 350-14L dredger, designed and built by Neumann Equipment Pty Ltd, Australia, are described. It is the latest in a series that has seen the bucketwheel made capable of coping with clays of various kinds and with indurated sand--two substances that had, until recently, severely affected the economic feasibility of alluvial mining. The 350-14L is also fitted with the latest electronics to measure and record production rates, and incorporates numerous design improvements aimed at eliminating unnecessary down time and improving operator efficiency.
