DOCUMENTARY FRAUDS: HOW ARE THEY PERPETRATED AND HOW CAN THEY BE PREVENTED

The author discusses the mechanics of international transactions involving bills of lading, commercial invoices, letters of credit, etc., and how these are manipulated or falsified by importers and exporters alike to their unscrupulous advantage. Numerous examples are cited of various documentary frauds that have occurred all over the world. The author then provides a list of simple checks and precautions for the protection of buyer and seller. He maintains that, as the incidence of documentary fraud shows no signs of abating, vulnerability can be reduced by increased care, vigilance and some common sense.
